Shine

Melana

Dear Friend,

We part-timers all sat around in rapt attention. How had these full-timers received their much-coveted positions? “Before my interview, I made this my mantra: ‘This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,’” confessed one.

When I later had my chance to go through two rounds of interviews at the same institution, I spent a long time praying, prepping, and getting myself into a confident mindset where God could shine through me.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16

A few days later, I was informed I didn’t get the position, though I knew I’d been in the top three. I was a bit disappointed because I knew this job would allow more flexibility for my other gig: mommyhood.

But then the strangest thing happened. They called to say their first choice had chosen a different position and would I come and take the job? YES!!! I internally screamed but steadied my voice to reply calmly. Anyway, I tried.

Over the next few years, that job brought greater responsibility, expanded professional growth, more positive impact on the community and my family—and a huge increase in pay. Not bad. I was floored by the goodness God had shown me.

Where are you struggling to find confidence to do something great? To make an impact? To let your light shine? Do you know that you actually can’t hide Christ’s light living in you? Jesus said our light is “un-hide-able.”

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14

God has uniquely gifted you for this moment. He’s prepared you, equipped you. To shine for His glory, to make a positive impact on the people around you. You can’t really help it; you’re just being fully you, doing what you do. And God’s just being God, doing what He does—shining through you!

Your friend,

Melana
